Queen's Blade Nanael Excellent Model 1/8 Scale (MegaHouse) Figure Review

Well it has been a while since my last figure review, but I'm back with another one. This time of a much much older figure, Queen's Blade Nanael Excellent Model, 1/8 Scale, from MegaHouse.  Released way back in 2008, Nanael and many other figures in the line can be easily found in Amiami's pre-owned section for bargain-bin prices, and maybe understandably so. They're a bit simplistic by modern standards, but that doesn't mean there isn't still a lot of enjoyment to be had from displaying these older figures.

In the Queen's Blade OVA Nanael's job is to observe fights for contenders in the Queen's Blade tournament or something like that. It's not a great show even for the copious amounts of fan service, but it does have  a lot of really cool character designs and of course all their clothing gets shredded off whenever they fight so it's worth checking out if you're into the fantasy genre and can put up with a shallow plot in exchange for some fan service.

I found Nanael to be somewhat of a challenge to photography. She's tilted at an angle, twisting in mid air, and has a wide wing-span.  Getting her all in frame from a variety of angles with a just a small backdrop to work with was pretty much impossible for me, but even still I had fun photographing her.

Her expression is cute and really good for an older figure, and the paint job isn't bad either. There aer some nice highlights and shadows in her hair and wings. The glossy pearlescent finish on her dress makes it look pretty cheap, and stick out a bit, but this is made up for by the fact that the whole thing can be cast off. Sometimes that can make clothing on a figure look a little weird like it doesn't actually fit them right but aside from a little bit of gap under the straps and around her boobs I think it actually looks really good on Nanael here.

Twisting her around a bit more you can get a view of her butt and panties, which are sculpted pretty well. I like the little gold band squeezing her thigh. I feel like belts on figures never really quite hang right, and this one is no exception. It just doesn't look very realistic the way it hangs loosely over her hips.  it's neat that her sword comes on a little armature and can be swiveled around, but an option to have her holding it would have been nice. You can probably cram it into her hands, but it's clear that's not what was intended.

Overall, this is a fine figure for what I paid for it. It was under $30, and I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure it just went in an order with a pile of figures form Amiami so shipping would have just been tacked on to a bigger EMS order. For that price, Nanael and a lot of the Queen's Blade figures that MegaHouse produced are a steal, really.

If you're interested in seeing the cast off pics and commentary, just see them here (NSFW)

Date A Live - Kurumi Tokisaki - 1/7 - Lingerie Ver.- Figure Review

I'm back with another figure review! This time it's another character I know nothing about really. Honestly, I had to google her name a few times to make sure I had it right and looking at it now I'm still not entirely sure. Apparently she is from a series called Date A Live. What I do know is that Kurumi Tokisaki is a very popular character who has had a lot of merchandise and several figures, though looking back it seems that many of them were from the infamously bad and now defunct Griffon Enterprises.  More recently she has started to get figures from better manufacturers like Alter and this superlative figure from Alphamax.. Normally Kurumi appears in a red and black gothic lolita style dress that I always thought had a certain saloon girl flare to it, but here it seems we've caught her in a more intimate moment. It's quite the outfit, consisting of a corset, garter belt, stockings, bonnet, some ribbons and high-heels. She's striking a prett

Faerie Queen Elaine Standard Ver. 1/5 Scale (Native) - Figure Review

It feels like a lifetime ago that I posted a preview for this figure once it was announced by Native. The world was definitely in a different place then, and perhaps I was as well in regards to this website and also the figure hobby in general. The past year has seen a real slow down in my figure acquisitions, for budgetary reasons and also logistical problems around shipping from Japan. I did still receive a couple of figures however, and Faerie Queen Elaine based on the original character illustration by Tony Taka was one of them.  Just a heads up, in a previous NSFW review I had the castoff pics on a separate linked page but here they're just further down on this page. I remember posting the promotional shots on reddit after she was released, and there and also on MFC people were pretty indifferent to both this figure and Tony's art. They said it was boring and too simplistic, and at the time I too thought maybe this figure was a little plain, however I did not know how wr

Tokyo Otaku Mode - Shop Review

Hello again! Today I would like to do the first of what I expect will be a series of shop reviews covering the best shops to order anime figures and other goods from if you live in the United States.  There are a lot of options when it comes to shops to buy from, so I hope this information can be useful to both new and veteran collectors.  The first shop I'll be talking about is one that I've been shopping with A LOT over the past two years or so: Tokyo Otaku Mode .  My hope is to answer the following question for you: Is Tokyo Otaku Mode a good shop to order anime figures from? The things that most stand out when going to this store are the frequent TOM point promotions and the at first glance high prices of the items. I know that for a year or two after first seeing the site I would wonder about those two things. What are these TOM points, exactly? Why the heck are the prices on this site so high? Well, it turns out there's good reasons for both of those things and e
