Fate/Apocrypha Saber of Red Mordred 1/7 Scale (Aquamarine) - Figure Review

Been a while since I posted a figure review but I'm back with a few thoughts and photos of Mordred from Fate/Apocrypha which is an.... anime... I think?  I'm familiar with FGO the phone game but beyond that I don't know much about the Fate series as a whole. I think it was visual novels, and then an anime, and then the phone game but like I said I don't know much about it. Anyway, what I do know is that the characters are VERY popular and I like a lot of the designs, including this really cool looking Mordred from Aquamarine.  This is a re-run of a figure that came out a few years ago and this time I wasn't about to let her pass me by again, so I did the right thing and ordered her on some points from TOM.

I really like the cocky grin they gave her in this figure.  Like I said, I don't know much about the character but it seems to suit her attitude and pose. Speaking of which,  Mordred has a really cool pose in this figure. She's got one hand over her shoulder holding her jacket, and is throwing that awesome grin back over her other shoulder. Her outfit is basically non-existent, which isn't really much different from a lot of the figures I've reviewed on this site, but where it does differ is that Mordred is by contrast very slim and petite.  Again, I don't know much about the character so forgive me if I'm wrong, but it's nice to see a non-loli figure with this kind of body.

Her tiny tube top and very short cutoff jorts are a good match for her slight frame.  It's a very simple outfit, but the design of it is quite nice. Little touches like her pink bra straps, metallic jewelry, and the dark band around the edges of her tube top give some visual flair. There's also some really nice shading and semi-gloss finish on her jacket which make it stand out against the otherwise matte paint application on the rest of the figure.

Small details like the strap adjusters from her bra, the chain of her necklace, and that v-shaped notch cut out of her tube top all give the viewer something to home in on once as they look more closely at the figure. I've mentioned before that I love stuff like this, if only because it makes me think of some artist or designer somewhere taking the extra time to build in these little details.

The way her jacket has been sculpted really gives this figure a lot of energy. Considering that she's standing in an otherwise static pose with both feet planted firmly on the ground, this figure could have been really boring. Instead, she's fun and dynamic.  She also looks good from more than one angle, which is always appreciated because you never really can be sure how a figure will fit into your display once you start putting it next to other figures.   I can see displaying her either face first, from her facing side, or from the back with just a peak of her face showing her grin. All are totally good options if you ask me.

Let's just take a moment to dwell on what is one of the most stand-out elements of this figure: her incredible abs! She's not a muscle girl with washboard abs, but what we do see here is some very nice subtle shading and sculpting giving that highlight Mordred's slim physique. Looking around my shelves it is hard to top this tummy. Absolutely stunning work.

One area that could use a little boost, however. Is her butt. It's fine. It's a bit on the flat side, but it's still cute and there's a nice little peek of cheek on account of her extremely short cutoffs.  With regards to those, I would have liked for some more stark highlights on their frayed edges, but they look pretty good anyway.

Last and probably least we've got her feet and base here. Pretty standard stuff. I appreciate the tiny base but they could have put a design on it or something at least.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the review. I had fun taking pictures of her even though i'm not 100% satisfied with how they came out, as usual. I tried some new lighting on recomendation from one of the users on r/animefigures and really liked this small desk lamp from amazon. It's easy to maneuver around, has a nice clean white light, and adjustable intensity.

I also got one of these color changing LED bulbs to use on a different lamp, and well you can see the results along with more photos below. It was a lot of fun to mess around with, at least, and pretty inexpensive. Right now the two things that seem to be evading me are a desired "sharpness" (for lack of a better term) to my images and again the consistent lighting issues i'm having that really I need to stop being lazy about and correct after the fact. The sharpness though is a thing where I'm not sure what the source of the problem is. I think applying some kind of scientific rigor to the settings on my camera until I achieve the desired result is called for here. It might even make a fun post. Until then, please enjoy the rest of the images and if it's your first time on the site there are plenty of other reviews to check out too!

Date A Live - Kurumi Tokisaki - 1/7 - Lingerie Ver.- Figure Review

I'm back with another figure review! This time it's another character I know nothing about really. Honestly, I had to google her name a few times to make sure I had it right and looking at it now I'm still not entirely sure. Apparently she is from a series called Date A Live. What I do know is that Kurumi Tokisaki is a very popular character who has had a lot of merchandise and several figures, though looking back it seems that many of them were from the infamously bad and now defunct Griffon Enterprises.  More recently she has started to get figures from better manufacturers like Alter and this superlative figure from Alphamax.. Normally Kurumi appears in a red and black gothic lolita style dress that I always thought had a certain saloon girl flare to it, but here it seems we've caught her in a more intimate moment. It's quite the outfit, consisting of a corset, garter belt, stockings, bonnet, some ribbons and high-heels. She's striking a prett

Faerie Queen Elaine Standard Ver. 1/5 Scale (Native) - Figure Review

It feels like a lifetime ago that I posted a preview for this figure once it was announced by Native. The world was definitely in a different place then, and perhaps I was as well in regards to this website and also the figure hobby in general. The past year has seen a real slow down in my figure acquisitions, for budgetary reasons and also logistical problems around shipping from Japan. I did still receive a couple of figures however, and Faerie Queen Elaine based on the original character illustration by Tony Taka was one of them.  Just a heads up, in a previous NSFW review I had the castoff pics on a separate linked page but here they're just further down on this page. I remember posting the promotional shots on reddit after she was released, and there and also on MFC people were pretty indifferent to both this figure and Tony's art. They said it was boring and too simplistic, and at the time I too thought maybe this figure was a little plain, however I did not know how wr

Tokyo Otaku Mode - Shop Review

Hello again! Today I would like to do the first of what I expect will be a series of shop reviews covering the best shops to order anime figures and other goods from if you live in the United States.  There are a lot of options when it comes to shops to buy from, so I hope this information can be useful to both new and veteran collectors.  The first shop I'll be talking about is one that I've been shopping with A LOT over the past two years or so: Tokyo Otaku Mode .  My hope is to answer the following question for you: Is Tokyo Otaku Mode a good shop to order anime figures from? The things that most stand out when going to this store are the frequent TOM point promotions and the at first glance high prices of the items. I know that for a year or two after first seeing the site I would wonder about those two things. What are these TOM points, exactly? Why the heck are the prices on this site so high? Well, it turns out there's good reasons for both of those things and e
