Rebuild of Evangelion - Rei Ayanami Complete Figure (Flare) Re-Release

Based on art by Shunya Yamashita whose work inspires the well known and popular Bishoujo figures put out by Kotobukiya, comes this stunning figure of Rei Ayanami. I've always been a fan of Rei but as I got older it became more and more apparent how creepy and weird the otaku obsession with her was. Forgive my ignorance of Evangelion's story (it has been over a decade since I watched it), but isn't she like the clone of Shinji's dead mom or something? WEIRD. Her perennial status as anime sex symbol seems undaunted by the nature of her character, however, and if it means we get figures like this then I'm ok with that.

Here we can see a more mature and grown up looking rendition of Rei. She certainly doesn't appear to be 14 or whatever the canonical age of the Evangelion cast is, in any case.  There was some recent kerfuffle on twitter about a certain popular artist producing up-aged drawings of another 14 year old anime character and all I can say is da fuq don't be dumb please be kind to others and simply ignore or don't engage with harmless things that don't affect you.  Let people enjoy things.  In any case, I think this kind of rendition is A LOT more tasteful than some that have been done of Rei depicted as a teenager.

Sculpted by Mitsumasa Yoshizawa, this figure has a more realistically rendered face that really makes her stand out. I wonder if some people aren't a fan of this style, but personally I really love it and I think it captures the wistful feeling of Shunya's art really well.

The main draw of this figure though has to be her outfit. It's kind of a race-queen looking take on the plug-suits from the series, with an extremely short bottom/skirt.  Her stockings and the transitions from opaque reflective material to sheer fabric all over the outfit combine to create an illusion that she is wearing far less than she is, when in reality only her chest and a narrow strip around her butt and thighs are fully exposed. This figure wants you to focus on those areas of exposed skin, her face, breasts, and butt, and each is executed just perfectly. Astounding work and I'm really happy to have another opportunity to get her with this re-release.

She's available to pre-order right now on Amiami with an anticipated May 2020 release date and a list price of  around 13,000 JPY before discounts. I'm hoping she goes up on Tokyo Otaku Mode soon, since they're currently running a 20x points promotion for premium members. Perfect time to sign up for premium and help me out in the process!

Date A Live - Kurumi Tokisaki - 1/7 - Lingerie Ver.- Figure Review

I'm back with another figure review! This time it's another character I know nothing about really. Honestly, I had to google her name a few times to make sure I had it right and looking at it now I'm still not entirely sure. Apparently she is from a series called Date A Live. What I do know is that Kurumi Tokisaki is a very popular character who has had a lot of merchandise and several figures, though looking back it seems that many of them were from the infamously bad and now defunct Griffon Enterprises.  More recently she has started to get figures from better manufacturers like Alter and this superlative figure from Alphamax.. Normally Kurumi appears in a red and black gothic lolita style dress that I always thought had a certain saloon girl flare to it, but here it seems we've caught her in a more intimate moment. It's quite the outfit, consisting of a corset, garter belt, stockings, bonnet, some ribbons and high-heels. She's striking a prett

Faerie Queen Elaine Standard Ver. 1/5 Scale (Native) - Figure Review

It feels like a lifetime ago that I posted a preview for this figure once it was announced by Native. The world was definitely in a different place then, and perhaps I was as well in regards to this website and also the figure hobby in general. The past year has seen a real slow down in my figure acquisitions, for budgetary reasons and also logistical problems around shipping from Japan. I did still receive a couple of figures however, and Faerie Queen Elaine based on the original character illustration by Tony Taka was one of them.  Just a heads up, in a previous NSFW review I had the castoff pics on a separate linked page but here they're just further down on this page. I remember posting the promotional shots on reddit after she was released, and there and also on MFC people were pretty indifferent to both this figure and Tony's art. They said it was boring and too simplistic, and at the time I too thought maybe this figure was a little plain, however I did not know how wr

Tokyo Otaku Mode - Shop Review

Hello again! Today I would like to do the first of what I expect will be a series of shop reviews covering the best shops to order anime figures and other goods from if you live in the United States.  There are a lot of options when it comes to shops to buy from, so I hope this information can be useful to both new and veteran collectors.  The first shop I'll be talking about is one that I've been shopping with A LOT over the past two years or so: Tokyo Otaku Mode .  My hope is to answer the following question for you: Is Tokyo Otaku Mode a good shop to order anime figures from? The things that most stand out when going to this store are the frequent TOM point promotions and the at first glance high prices of the items. I know that for a year or two after first seeing the site I would wonder about those two things. What are these TOM points, exactly? Why the heck are the prices on this site so high? Well, it turns out there's good reasons for both of those things and e
